How does a WiFi QR code work?

The code contains a short line of text in the format WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:password;; — the network name, the encryption type, and the password. When a phone camera reads text starting with WIFI:, it offers to join that network. Because the credentials are inside the code, it works before the phone has any internet connection.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. iPhones running iOS 11 or later (2017 onwards) and Android 10 or later read WiFi codes with the built-in camera. Older Android phones may need Google Lens or a scanner app. Android can also generate a code for a network you are already on, under Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi → Share.

Is it safe to put a WiFi QR code on display?

The password is stored in plain text inside the code, so anyone who scans or photographs it has your password. Use it for your guest network, not the network with your printers, cameras, and work machines, and keep the printed code inside the premises rather than in a street-facing window.

Does it work with WPA3 or a hidden network?

Choose WPA for WPA2 and for the WPA2/WPA3 transition mode most routers ship with. If your router is WPA3-only, support varies by phone — run the guest network in transition mode or use Android's own share feature. For a hidden SSID, switch on the hidden-network option, otherwise phones will look for a broadcast network and fail to find it.

What size should I print it?

Three to five centimetres is plenty for a table card or a sticker read from arm's length. For a code on a wall read from two metres, make it about 20 cm. The rule of thumb is one tenth of the scanning distance, never smaller than 2 cm.

Does the code expire if I keep the same password?

No. It is a static code with your credentials inside it, so it keeps working for as long as the network name and password stay the same. There is no subscription behind it and no server that can switch it off. Change the password and you print a new code.

How It Works

The code holds a standard WIFI: string — the network name, the encryption type, the password, and a hidden-network flag — which iOS 11+ and Android 10+ cameras recognise and offer to join. Special characters in the name or password are escaped for you. Everything is assembled and drawn in your browser.

Privacy

Your WiFi password never leaves the page. The QR code is generated locally by JavaScript, so no server ever receives your network name or password. The trade-off is physical: anyone who scans or photographs the printed code can read the password, so place it where only the people you want on the network can see it.

Limitations

WPA2-Enterprise networks (the kind with a username as well as a password) cannot be encoded this way and need a configuration profile from your IT team. Routers running WPA3-only mode use a newer value that some phones still ignore; transition mode works everywhere. The code is static, so changing your WiFi password means printing a new one.
