These dates come from astronomical calculations. Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days, and each month of the Islamic calendar begins when the new crescent is seen. In many years, Pakistan, India and Bangladesh begin Ramadan and celebrate Eid a day after Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, because the moon is sighted there a day later. The last days of Ramadan

• The last ten nights are the most important nights of the month. Many people increase their prayer and charity, seeking Laylat al-Qadr — the Night of Decree.
• Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana) is a small charity paid on behalf of every member of the household. It must be given before the Eid prayer so that people in need can celebrate too. Most mosques announce the amount per person each year.

Chaand Raat

Chaand Raat — "the night of the moon" — is the evening the Shawwal crescent is sighted and Eid is announced. In Pakistan and India it is one of the busiest, happiest nights of the year:

• families gather to watch for the moon or wait for the announcement;
• markets stay open late for last-minute Eid clothes, shoes and gifts;
• women and girls apply mehndi and buy glass bangles;
• kitchens start on sheer khurma and sawaiyan for the morning.

It is also when the first "Chaand Raat Mubarak" and "Eid Mubarak" messages start arriving.

Eid day

1. Get ready early. A bath (ghusl), new or best clothes and a little perfume.
2. Eat something sweet first. It is Sunnah to eat an odd number of dates before the Eid ul Fitr prayer.
3. Say the takbeer on the way to the prayer: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illallah…
4. Pray the Eid prayer in congregation, usually in the morning at a mosque or open ground, followed by the khutbah.
5. Greet and visit. Hugs after the prayer, then family visits, food and Eidi — gifts of money for children from elders.

How to wish Eid Mubarak

• Eid Mubarak — "blessed Eid". The universal greeting.
• Eid ul Fitr Mubarak — when you want to name the Eid.
• Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum — "may Allah accept it from us and from you", a traditional greeting after Ramadan.
• Khair Mubarak — the usual reply to Eid Mubarak in Pakistan and India, "blessings to you too".
• عید مبارک — Eid Mubarak in Urdu script.
